Castlereagh Country

Legendary Australian poet Banjo Paterson aptly describes the Castlereagh River as it snakes its way through the mountains, plains and forests of North West NSW.  The Castlereagh itself is a wide, sandy river rising in the Warrumbungle mountains that joins the Barwon Darling river system in the North West.  Today the Castlereagh links the shires of Gilgandra, Coonamble and Coonabarabran - the expansive loop forming the Castlereagh Country region.  The land is fertile with various grazing uses including traditional sheep and cattle with diversification into emus, buffalo, goats and deer along with a wide range of crops.

The three shires of Castlereagh Country (Gilgandra, Coonamble and Coonabarabran) are within an easy 5 to 7 hours travel from Sydney.  The towns are defined by captivating landscapes, community spirit and economic innovation and resilience.  The Castlereagh region lies on one of the mail inland highway networks between Brisbane, Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide.  The larger towns of Gilgandra and Coonabarabran as well as the smaller villages of Tooraweenah and Binnaway are situated between the provincial centres of Dubbo, Narrabri and Tamworth on the Newell & Oxley Highways.  Gilgandra and Coonamble lie on the Castlereagh Highway, which forms part of the the Great Inland Way (known as the 'flat-track') from Melbourne to Cairns.

The climate of Castlereagh Country is considered pleasant and is best described as temperate.  Maximum Summer temperatures are warm to hot with dry heat and low humidity providing conditions that are conducive to work and recreational activities.  Winters are mild to cool with occasional frosts followed by beautiful sunny days.

All three shires have extensive calendars of events from picnic races, jazz concerts, annual rodeos and agricultural shows as well as special festivals and celebrations.

Castlereagh Country can offer you a taste of the 'good life'.  The region is ideal for people who want to holiday in unspoilt, wide-open spaces and be able to enjoy the peace and tranquillity that only the country can provide.
